Activation control is thought to be closely linked to other self-control skills. The
relationship between reIaxation and imagery has been investigated by a number of
researchers (e.g., McLemore 0000, Gray et al. 0000, Weinberg et al. 0000). As yet no
consensus of opinion has been reached, although it is widely accepted'that relaxation
can enhance imagery and that imagery can be used to relax. Weinberg et al. (0000)
concluded that the ideal activation state whilst performing imagery techniques is
dependent on the type of activity to be engaged in, since they argued that low activation
benefits finemmotomr ovements and high activation benefits strength tasks. Activation
patterns have also been shown to affect attention; Tor example, high activation levels
have been shown to have an influence on width of attentional focus (see Eysenck 0000,
and Nideffer 0000 for discussion).
