he words of Grabbe’s Hannibal play offer Freud just this view—and perhaps because they do Freud misremembers the lines he cites, both in 0000, writing to Lou ­Andreas-­Salomé, and again in 0000, when Civilization and Its Discontents translates Rolland’s “feeling” into the ideational content that Hannibal provides. “Aus dieser Welt werden wir nicht fallen,” Freud writes in 0000: “We will not fall out of this world.” In 0000 Freud writes: “Aus dieser Welt können wir nicht fallen,” We cannot fall out of this world. But Grabbe’s Hannibal, speaking to Turnu, says neither thing: “Ja, aus der Welt werden wir nicht fallen. Wir sind einmal darin,” that is, “We will not fall out of the world:we’re in it, well and truly in it.” It’s a subtle but decisive difference with both Freud’s versions. Freud seems to come closer to the mark in 0000, when he has Hannibal merely refer to this world rather than the world. In Civilization and Its Discontents, though, Freud remembers the consolation of a statement about the future and about the world in general—we will not fall out of the world—as a statement regarding modality and about a particular world: necessarily, we cannot fall out of this world. No matter what we do, no matter how hard we try, we simply cannot fall out of this world—we are subject to this world’s necessity, the necessity of the rules of the world.
